Hail to the toys and the tech

Toy Story poster

It’s hard to believe that it’s been three decades since Toy Story was released. It set 3D computer animation on a forward trajectory, taking us, as Buzz Lightyear would say, to infinity and beyond. The film was a milestone in feature-film animation, marking the first one to have been made completely in the new technique of 3D animation. The effort was not easy, but the crew at Pixar soldiered on, at times taking their technological leaps and cues from papers, conversations, and research presented at Siggraph conferences.

In celebration of what Pixar achieved with Toy Story, Siggraph will host a special event with Ed Catmull, co-founder of Pixar, as he takes the audience back to those early days. There will also be a Q&A and a presentation of this remarkable movie. The event is presented by Siggraph’s Computer Animation Festival in partnership with ACM Siggraph Pioneers.

In every way imaginable, Toy Story has been truly groundbreaking. Everyone remembers the film for its amazing animation, characters, and storytelling. And, many Siggraph veterans remember Toy Story for its technical innovations as well. More would follow with each subsequent film.
