It may sound like an oxymoron, but at times, less can be more and exactly what we want. AMD’s Ryzen 7 7700X3D is part of the company’s 3D V-Cache line of gaming CPUs. But, rather than continuing to raise the ceiling, particularly in terms of performance, this newcomer processor lowers it purposefully, giving budget-conscious users more of an option when it comes to their CPU.
The Ryzen 7 7700X3D shares its silicon with the three-year-old 7800X3D, offering the same eight-core/16-thread Zen 4 die, the same 96 MB 3D V-Cache L3, and the same 120 W TDP. Where they differ, however, is in frequency—and price. The 7700X3D is lower-clocked at 4.0 GHz (base) and 4.5 GHZ (max), compared to 4.2 and 5.0, respectively, for the 7800X3D. As for pricing, the 7700X3D will run users $329, while the 7800X3D will cost about $360— though that price can fluctuate.
Another feature of the 7700X3D is that it is relatively insensitive to the DDR5’s speed, which reviewer Mario Vasquez describes as “one of its most underrated selling points in the current market,” given the sharp increase of DDR5 pricing this past year as AI data center demand looks to satiate its growing hunger within the consumer space.
