Substance Source is a physically based materials library of customizable assets.
The Substance line of 3D texture authoring software tools from Allegorithmic has added a new library of assets for its users. The free library uses Sketchfab’s “see it from any angle” online visualization technology, making it easier to select the right texture.
The new library, Substance Source, opens with a good amount of physically based materials. Substance artists can start with a material from the library and modify it as needed to suit their creative vision. The materials are designed to be used by other 3D content creation products as well as in Substance Painter.
As part of the launch, Allegorithmic has commissioned seven artists to produce specialty assets created with Substance Source content, ranging from toy trains and Chinese dragons to intricately designed watches.
The idea, says Allegorithmic CEO and founder Sébastien Deguy, is to offer a curated library of high-quality materials not just for the Substance line but for every major 3D content software product. “Artists need inspiration, whether this consists of samples, references, or elements that can be customized and remixed.”

What do we think?
As we reported earlier this year (see “The pirate rule of success at Allegorithmic,”) Allegorithmic has a hit on its hands with Substance Painter. By offering materials that can be used in other products as well as in the Substance line, this new library can be a resource to a wider variety of artists and designers, using the same textures and materials in different creative ways.
