Worldwide PC shipments reached 59.7 million units in the second quarter of 2023, representing a 16.6% decrease compared to the same period in 2022, according to preliminary results from Gartner. The data reveals that the PC market’s decline has slowed, suggesting that shipment volumes may have reached their lowest point. Sequential growth from the previous quarter indicates initial signs of stabilization.
The top vendors in the worldwide PC market remained unchanged in Q2 2023, with Lenovo maintaining its position as the market leader, commanding a 24% market share. Lenovo experienced a decline in year-over-year shipments, although it showed sequential growth. The company faced difficulties in the EMEA and Asia Pacific regions but had more moderate declines in Latin America and North America.
HP, the second-largest vendor, saw only a slight decline in shipments during the second quarter, marking the end of consecutive double-digit declines. While laptop shipments grew modestly, desktop shipments declined. HP performed well in the U.S. laptop market, experiencing double-digit year-over-year growth.
Dell, the third-largest vendor, recorded its fifth consecutive quarter of decline, with shipments decreasing across most key regions. The Asia Pacific market posed the greatest challenge for Dell, as shipments declined faster than the regional average. However, Dell maintained its top vendor position in the U.S. desktop market.
In the United States, the PC market declined by 8.6% in Q2 2023. The stable U.S. economy eased concerns among small and midsize business buyers and gradually generated PC demand. Educational institutions’ demand for Chromebooks and government buyers’ interest in laptops experienced a refresh, but consumer PC demand remained weak.
In the EMEA region, the PC market continued its decline for the sixth consecutive quarter, experiencing a 14.6% year-over-year decrease. Political unrest, inflationary pressures, and interest rate increases influenced the demand for PCs.
The Asia Pacific PC market also faced a significant decline of 26.9% year-over-year. Economic uncertainty and low consumer demand, particularly in China, contributed to the region’s poor performance.
