There was a time when RED and Nikon were more foes than friends, facing off in court over patent infringements. But that is water under the bridge, as the fairly new kid (albeit an aggressive one) on the pro digital cinema block and the longtime still camera and lens maker are now family. RED is now a subsidiary of Nikon following their recent acquisition─for a reported low price of $85 million. They say opposites attract, and indeed, the two companies cannot be more different. But that can work in their favor. RED can capitalize on Nikon’s reputation and its extensive engineering expertise. Nikon gains entry into the professional digital cinema camera market with some street cred. What will the future bring?
