Sébastien Deguy, founder of Allegorithmic, maker of the Substance 3D tools, and then VP of 3D & Immersive at Adobe following its acquisition of Allegorithmic, recently announced his departure from Adobe. He has since announced the launch of the digital puppetry company Sans String Studio, a brand-new animation and gaming facility.

Sébastien Deguy has spent three decades in the tech space, serving the needs of artists—initially at his company Allegorithmic, maker of the Substance tools, and then as VP of 3D & immersive at Adobe after it had acquired Allegorithmic. Now, Deguy is embracing his creator side.

Deguy, along with animator/gameplay artist Ryan Corniel, have formed a brand-new animation and game company called San String Studio, focusing on digital puppetry.

The new studio has secured pre-seed funding from a16z Games, a project of Andreessen Horowitz. Deguy says Sans Strings Studio will be joining their incubator project Speedrun 005, which will run from July through October.

“After 30 years in the tech space serving artists—feeling inspired and humbled by their talent as we created software tools to support them—it’s now my turn to embrace my creative side and take the leap,” says Deguy.

Deguy has also taken up a musical career, in music production as Matterflow. Matterflow’s work can be heard on Sound Cloud (https://soundcloud.com/matterflow/tracks).

“Companies pivot and so do people, I guess,” Deguy says. “I couldn’t be more excited and feel more aligned with myself as I make this turn, embracing the beautiful uncertainty and chaos that comes with creating. Today, I’m taking my chance, and I am ready to rumble!”
