The PC gaming hardware market will grow to almost $37 billion in 2022, but at a modest 1.05% CAGR from 2018 levels.
Jon Peddie Research (JPR), the industry’s research and consulting firm for graphics and multimedia, reported in its newest gaming market study regarding the PC gaming hardware market, which consists of personal computers, upgrades, and peripherals used for gaming.
The market will grow to almost $37 billion in 2022, but at a modest 1.05% CAGR from 2018 levels. The Do-It-Yourself (DIY) market is expected to be a drag on growth with peripheral/accessory sales and prebuilt/custom prebuilt PCs helping the growth rate.
Jon Peddie, President of JPR, said, “The DIY market is still being affected by the protracted extinction of entry-level desktop discrete Graphic Processing Units (GPUs). Gamers generally don’t build DIY rigs using an integrated graphics solution and off the shelf systems in this class offer a lot of bang for the buck. With some additional weakness in the mid-range, we see the DIY market falling over the next three years, then stabilizing. The good news is that DIY activity in the high-end is quite healthy in that time frame. When gamers look at the price of boutique brand gaming PC’s which can cost upwards of $5k, many justify home builds for a few thousand less sporting similar performance.”
Ted Pollak, Senior Analyst Gaming Industry, notes, “While DIY spending in the High-End is forecast to rise we are seeing stronger growth of system configured PCs from major manufacturers. Due to the healthy economy, many gamers who demand the best performance prefer the convenience, warranty, and support of off the shelf and semi-custom machines. This translates into the highest growth segment. Also of note is the stable and consistent growth of peripherals/accessories across all levels. Gamers of all budgets need mice, keyboards, speakers, headsets, flight sticks, racing wheels, and other peripherals. These accessories get better over time with new features and gamers often replace them on technical or style merits before their old stuff wears out.”
