TIBURON, CA (June 4, 2025) — Jon Peddie Research reports the global PC-based graphics processor unit (GPU) market reached 68.8 million units in Q1`25 and PC CPU shipments decreased to 61.9 million units.
Overall, GPUs will have a compound annual growth rate of -6.1% from 2025 to 2028 and reach an installed base of 2.8 billion units at the end of the forecast period. Over the next five years, the penetration of discrete GPUs (dGPU) in the PC will be 15%.

Year to year, total GPU shipments, including all platforms and all GPUs, decreased by -1.6%, desktop graphics decreased by -16%, and notebooks decreased by -10%.
As indicated in the following chart, AMD’s overall market share decreased by -1.6% from last quarter, Intel’s market share decreased by -2.1%, and Nvidia’s market share increased 3.6%.

Overall, CPU unit shipments decreased -0.3% from last quarter; AMD’s decreased -12%, and Intel’s decreased -14%.
- The GPU’s overall attach rate (which includes integrated and discrete GPUs, desktops, notebooks, and workstations) in PCs for the quarter increased to 111%, up 2.1% from the last quarter.
- The overall PC CPU market decreased -0.3% year to year and -14% quarter to quarter.

The first quarter is traditionally flat to down. This quarter’s GPU shipments were down from the 10-year average of 2%.
“The PC market is caught in the crosswinds, some might say crossfire, of Trump’s trade wars, with on-again and off-again, special cutout, and changing import/export rules. As part of the turmoil, some PC suppliers have pulled back or held orders, while a few have increased orders hoping to lock in prices,” said Dr. Jon Peddie, president of Jon Peddie Research. “Pre-ordering to lock in prices is a temporary fix, which will cause a depression in future quarter’s sales, as discussed here. We think overall PC sales and, subsequently, client PC GPU sales will be down for the year.”
