VFX studio Freefolk has launched its eighth annual Futurefolk competition, with the aim of naturing, inspiring, and kick-starting the careers of the next generation of VFX talent with a paid internship. Freefolk is looking for individuals from all types of backgrounds who exhibit skill, creativity, and enthusiasm. Importantly, they are seeking individuals—whether a budding animator, CG generalist, FX TD, or compositor—who haven’t taken the university route.

“We are always on the lookout for talented VFX artists and aim to search out the more hidden talent, those who might not have a degree or VFX qualification but do have the passion and commitment it takes,” said Freefolk Founder and Creative Director Jason Watts.
Since 2018 Freefolk have welcomed 16 Futurefolkers who have all gone on to have successful careers in the industry. Not only is this a chance to gain invaluable advice and help from talented professionals, but it’s also an opportunity to gain work experience in VFX.
Applicants need to compile a two-minute reel of their best work, whether done in 2D or 3D. The person selected will be awarded a one-month paid summer work placement. The internship will involve experience within Freefolk Commercials and Freefolk Film & Episodic, in either the 2D or 3D department. The deadline for submissions is midnight on April 29, 2025. Applications should be made on the Freefolk website here.
