It was a monster mash at this year’s Oscars, with Godzilla Minus One taking home the coveted award for visual effects. With 37 Godzilla films in the franchise—33 from Toho (Japan), one from TriStar, and three from Legendary/Warner Bros.—the small visual effects team from Japan broke through the Hollywood juggernaut in the Academy’s VFX category and bested Hollywood with a beast of a performance. Their backstory is very interesting, a literal David and Goliath tale. And the work is impressive, especially considering they achieved it with a fraction of the budget and a fraction of the artists compared to their competition. But for this award, it’s the actual VFX that really counts.
