Lenovo has added—again—a 17-inch ThinkPad mobile workstation to its product line. The addition will have a bigger impact on the number-three workstation suppliers’ business than you might think.
When they discontinued marketing a 17-inch model a few years ago, the reason seemed sensible. The 15-inch models outsold the 17-inch models by a wide margin (similar to other vendors’ sales). So why spend the extra time and money developing a product that very few will buy and add little to the bottom line?
But there is a difference between a focus on one model, and the market expectations of a broad-based supplier.
