What’s your GPU doing when you’re not gaming?

Put that puppy to work.

Obsolete data—this is as of 28 March.

Donate computing power to help conquer COVID-19:

By downloading Folding@home, your system can contribute to researchers running simulations. The calculations are enormous and every contributed compute cycle can help. Each simulation run is like buying a lottery ticket. The more tickets one buys, the better our chances of hitting the jackpot—i.e., a solution. Usually, one’s computer will never be idle, but the folding org has had such an enthusiastic response to their COVID-19 work that one might see some intermittent downtime as the org works to setup more simulations.

While one is going with their everyday activities, one’s computer will be working to help the org find cures for diseases like cancer, ALS, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s, Influenza, and many others. The Folding@home Consortium is made up of 11 laboratories around the world.

Please be patient, says Folding at home director Greg Bowman. “As we face the COVID-19 pandemic together we are working like mad to start simulations of COVID-19 proteins. The enthusiastic response to our effort has been tremendous and has sometimes emptied our queues. This is a great “problem” to have as there is no end to the valuable science we can do, it’s just a matter of giving us some time to get more running.”

To help tackle COVID-19, the long-running Folding@Home program, a distributed computing project for simulating protein dynamics, hit a breakthrough by achieving more than an exaflop of processing power. That’s more than 1,000,000,000,000,000,000 operations per second, all through crowdsourcing efforts.

Nvidia reports that in just a couple of days, nearly 400,000 gamers donated their GPU resources to build up the Folding@Home supercomputer.

Bowman tweeted: “There are now over 1M devices running @foldingathome! This includes over 356K @nvidia GPUs, over 79K @AMD GPUs, and over 593K CPUs! Thanks to all our volunteers! We’re planning more blog posts on our #COVID19 work/results this week, please stay tuned.”
