Previously undisclosed acquisition becomes new consumer-class app for 3D design-print of characters.

Tinkerplay has its origins in Modio, acquired October 2014 but not announced until the relaunch as Tinkerplay. Users drag and drop pre-drawn elements of characters, which can be further customized. The parts all include snap-together connections for assembly when 3D printed.

The launch comes with an extensive parts library. It is available immediately for iOS, Android, Windows and Windows phones.

Modio was an Icelandic start-up Autodesk noticed after it launched an initial app for iPad in early 2014 for designing simple 3D printing projects. The former Modio offices in Reykjavik are now Autodesk Iceland, where the former Modio staff of six will continue to work.

Modio was founded by Hilmar Gunnarsson, who previous started a successful IT company which he sold to Nokia in 2008. Gunnarsson has also operated his own venture fund based in Iceland.
